On the north side of Red Square is the old Rossiya Insurance Offices that were taken over in 1918 to become the headquarters of the KGB. In 1930 the building was extended and the enormous, underground Lubyanka Prison added, where the KGB interrogated, tortured, imprisoned and killed hundreds of thousands of people. Despite numerous changes of name (and claims of a change of ethics), the Russian intelligence services still occupy the building. | |
